Cathie Wood’s Ark Trims Bitcoin ETF Holdings as BTC Extends October Losses
Ark Invest has sold approximately $15.9 million worth of its own as the largest cryptocurrency struggles to hold above $80,000 amid broader market uncertainty. The firm led by Cathie Wood reduced its holdings of the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF ) across its investment funds as Bitcoin retreated from its early-October highs, according to CryptoProwl. The cryptocurrency was trading near $79,700 early on Oct. 27, down approximately 6% for the month after starting October around $86,000.The pullback comes after Bitcoin gained more than 40% in the third quarter, highlighting a reversal in momentum as investors reassess their exposure to riskier assets. Why Did Ark Invest Sell ARKB?The sale does not necessarily signal a change in Ark Invest’s long-term Bitcoin outlook. The firm follows portfolio diversification guidelines that prevent individual holdings from exceeding 10% of a fund’s assets. Its ARKB sale could therefore reflect portfolio rebalancing rather than a broader retreat from cryptocurrency.ARKB has attracted approximately $1.1 billion in cumulative net inflows since its inception, according to ETFDb, and currently manages around $2.9 billion in assets. However, accumulated inflows and assets under management do not guarantee positive returns. Bitcoin’s price movements can affect the ETF’s value, while investor redemptions can further influence its asset base. The transaction also does not establish whether Ark has reduced its overall Bitcoin exposure across all its portfolios, as the sale specifically concerns its holdings in ARKB.Bitcoin Faces Pressure From Rates and Market UncertaintyBitcoin’s decline comes as investors weigh concerns about elevated AI stock valuations, rising oil prices and higher bond yields. These factors can weaken risk appetite and prompt investors to reduce exposure to volatile assets. The U.S. Federal Reserve’s interest-rate decision on Wednesday is another key event for markets. Expectations for monetary policy could influence Bitcoin’s near-term direction, particularly if Treasury yields remain elevated.Investors will also monitor spot Bitcoin ETF flows, Treasury yields and the Fed’s policy guidance for clues about market direction.Unlike bonds, Bitcoin does not generate interest income. Consequently, higher yields can make income-producing assets relatively more attractive, potentially weighing on demand for speculative investments. For ARKB, Bitcoin’s price performance and investor flows will remain crucial to its assets under management. Ark’s latest sale underscores how portfolio managers can adjust positions even when their firms maintain a broader commitment to the cryptocurrency.Preview Photo: Shutterstock
