DogeOS Opens Public Testnet, Bringing Lending and Games to Dogecoin
DogeOS opened the public testnet for its application layer on Dogecoin Wednesday, according to a press release, giving developers a trial environment to build apps on the network before real funds are involved. The project, built by the team behind the MyDoge wallet, runs as a separate layer rather than altering Dogecoin's base protocol. Its documentation describes DogeOS as an application-layer rollup running on a zero-knowledge virtual machine, which generates cryptographic proofs that transactions are valid. The layer is also compatible with Ethereum's virtual machine, meaning smart contracts, wallets and tools built for Ethereum can run on it as well.Transaction fees on the testnet are paid in DOGE, and a faucet distributes 42.069 test DOGE per day to developers.Several teams are already building on the network. Superposition Finance is developing a lending protocol, Derps is building a perpetual exchange, USDoge is a collateralized stablecoin, and Snag is building a prediction market aggregator. Mini-game publisher PlaysOut, which previously outlined plans for roughly 15 Doge-themed casual games, is also on the list.DogeOS founder and CEO Jordan Jefferson described the launch as marking the beginning of Dogecoin's evolution from asset to ecosystem while Dogecoin Foundation director Timothy Stebbing framed the project as preserving the base ledger's integrity while adding utility one layer above, calling that balance central to what DogeOS represents.Changes to Dogecoin's base layer move slowly by design. The network has no formal on-chain governance, so proposals, including one DogeOS submitted in July 2025 to bring zero-knowledge proofs to the base layer, require contributor review, community discussion, security audits and miner buy-in before taking effect. The push for new utility comes against a weak backdrop for the token. Dogecoin has fallen roughly 75% from its all-time high and remains in a confirmed bearish trend, even as several Dogecoin exchange-traded funds have launched. No mainnet launch date for DogeOS has been set.DOGE is trading at 0.95 per digital token.
