Grayscale Opens A Direct Crypto-To-Fund Route Across Ten Products
TL;DR: Eligible Grayscale investors can now contribute crypto assets directly for shares in selected products, avoiding a preliminary conversion into cash.Grayscale is making the journey from a crypto wallet to a conventional investment account a little less circuitous. The asset manager announced on October 21 that eligible investors can subscribe to a selected group of digital asset products by contributing underlying tokens in kind. The lineup spans ten products, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Chainlink, Dogecoin, Avalanche, Sui, Hyperliquid and Zcash vehicles. Rather than selling the asset first, a qualified investor may be able to transfer eligible digital assets in exchange for product shares through the relevant arrangements. It is an operational change with implications for custody, estate planning and the ways sophisticated holders manage their exposure. But it is not a promise that anyone can walk into a brokerage account and swap a handful of tokens for ETF shares. Grayscale lists substantial minimum investment amounts, and eligibility and product procedures apply.Nor should the announcement be confused with universal retail in-kind redemptions or a guarantee of cheaper execution. There can still be transfer risks, tax consequences and differences between a fund’s market price and underlying asset value. The broader significance is that more of traditional asset management is learning to accept digital assets without forcing every transaction through cash first.Written by the News Desk and edited by Samuel Rae.
